2022 LBN Scholarship Recipients

Aleksandra Partyka ($500)

Aleksandra has been volunteering at LBN since the summer of 2020. She is currently involved as an EC, a member of the Fundraising Team, and a member of the Recruitment Team. The role of EC is very important to her because it gives her the opportunity to directly improve children’s educational skills. It is wonderful how their interactions with mentors help them open up. Watching children and their mentors grow gives her huge motivation for fundraising and recruiting.

Aleksandra is in her last year of a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology. Her end goal career is to become a lawyer and have her own law firm that will be regularly providing pro bono services to marginalized people. It is also her dream to start a foundation that will collect money and support single parents who are victims of domestic violence. She is currently a member of the external and community affairs committee at Simon Fraser Student Society and working with amazing people on multiple projects, including providing water to people living in the Downtown East Side of Vancouver during the heat wave.

Aleksandra is contacting local organizations and MPs to see what can be
done to support those who are less fortunate. She believes that even though she cannot change the world, she can change the lives of people around her who are underprivileged and need support.

Anushka Pradhan ($200)

During her 2 years with Learning Buddies, Anushka has volunteered within the capacity of a mentor and executive coordinator for the math and reading programs. She is currently attending Queen's University for the Health Sciences program and hopes to pursue a career in medicine in the near future. In her spare time, Anushka loves to engage in visual arts, play table tennis, swim, and dog-sit! She is also a foodie that loves to try out new restaurants and cuisines.

For Anushka, the best part about volunteering with LBN is the focus on building a relationship with the buddy as it pertains to integrating their interests and values with their academic goals. She is also very passionate about equipping buddies with a growth-mindset towards learning as they go on to pursue further education. Additionally, she highly values the sense of community she has gained from LBN along with the opportunity to cross paths with people who have encouraged and supported her in taking on leadership roles within the organization

Tavneet Jandu ($200)

Tavneet first volunteered with Learning Buddies Network in 2019 and has been a remote Reading Mentor, Program Coordinator and Executive Coordinator. Given her passion for learning, she is thrilled to be a part of the Learning Buddies community so she can contribute to building vital math and reading skills in children and foster their love for learning!

Tavneet is currently a student at the University of British Columbia in the Faculty of Science. Her positive experience working with mentors and teaching children at LBN has inspired her to explore a career in the education field.

Tavneet is extremely grateful to receive the 2022 LBN Scholarship and would like to extend a huge thank you to the individuals at Learning Buddies Network for their support over the years by helping her grow into the leader she is today.
