Fright Night Done Right

Halloween isn’t just for the little ones. It’s your chance to channel your creative side and come up with the best costumes! But the dark streets, busy crowds, and constant distractions can quickly turn the excitement into chaos. The good news? A little planning and caution can keep you safe while still keeping the night fun. Here are a few tips on how to get through Halloween night without any unwanted scares.

Costume Level-Up

  1. Use reflective tape or glow stick bracelets to make yourself more visible to drivers. Not only does it make you easier to spot on the street, but it also makes your outfit look cooler if it matches the colours of the glow sticks!

  2. Wearing face paint or makeup instead of a mask is recommended, as masks can obstruct your vision!

  3. If you know you’ll be doing a lot of walking, choose comfortable shoes over fancy footwear. Your feet will thank you at the end of the night!

Stick Together

  1. Walk together in a group and watch out for one another.

  2. Set up a group chat or share your location with each other so no one gets lost or left behind.

  3. If your group decides to split up, establish a meetup spot to return to at the end of the night, just in case!

Street Smart

  1. Always walk on sidewalks and cross at crosswalks. Don’t take any shortcuts.

  2. When crossing the street, ensure that you have your headphones off and your phone in your pocket.

  3. Before you begin crossing the street, look both ways and make eye contact with the drivers. It’s not 100% guaranteed that they already see you.

Snacking Wisely

  1. Always inspect candy wrappers first before opening them, and get rid of anything that looks suspicious or is unsealed.

  2. Read the ingredient list before eating the candy because you never know if it contains something you’re allergic to!

Safe Partying

For the older ones heading to a Halloween party:

  1. Have a confirmed ride home, whether it is a designated driver, Uber, or a trusted adult.

  2. Keep an eye on your drink at all times. If you go to the bathroom, get a new drink after instead of asking someone to watch it for you.

  3. Parties can get crowded very quickly. Keep an eye out for each other! If one of your friends decides to leave early, make sure you see them leave safely. If they are getting picked up, ensure the person picking them up is someone they know and trust.

Halloween is a mix of freedom and fun, but don’t let one careless move turn it into the wrong type of memorable night! With a few simple precautions, you and your friends can still have a great time. Whether you’re trick-or-treating, going to a party, or just walking around the neighbourhood in your costume, make sure you get home safely and happily. Halloween only happens once every year, so have as much fun as possible while also keeping your eyes open! Stay safe and have a good Halloween!
