By volunteering with Learning Buddies Network, you have plenty of opportunities to grow, such as by joining our Recruitment and Engagement Team or Volunteer Team.

Recruitment & Engagement Team

The Recruitment & Engagement Team acts in a leadership capacity for LBN recruitment in their respective secondary/post-secondary schools. Members participate in a variety of activities, such as hosting information booths at volunteer fairs, and gain skills in workshop facilitation, event planning, marketing, and communications.

You will gain skills in workshop facilitation, event planning, marketing, and communications.

This is a leadership role that requires initiative and is a one-year-long commitment.

    • Attend monthly meetings

    • Report to your Regional Coordinator

    • Participate in the following projects:

      • Organization LBN information booths at volunteer fairs

      • Post on school social media

      • Reach out to career counsellors in high school and university

      • Arrange and participate in engagement events

Our focus would be on recruitment from May to November, then engagement from December to May. Workshops will be hosted by this team and be open to all LBN volunteers.

Human Resources Team

The Human Resources Assistants (HRA) are a core part of helping the organization expand and grow to reach more buddies. They work as a liaison between volunteers and staff, ensuring clear communication and responding to requests and questions. Additionally, HRAs get the opportunity to work in recruitment, administration, policy-making, and other HR duties of the organization.

Nur Hussein

My name is Nur Hussein and I am a fourth-year psychology student at the University of Ottawa. I am volunteering as an HR assistant so that I can make a positive difference in people’s live. I hope to get to know all of you and help you with any questions you may have. Let’s make a difference together!

Simha Karsenti

My name is Simha Karsenti (He/Him), I am in my last year at York University for Human Resource management. Currently volunteering within the HR department for LBN trying to get as much hands on experience as I can. Very excited to work with everyone. A fun fact about me is that I am fully fluent in English and French.

Lexi Adler

My name is Lexi Adler (she/her), and I am a third-year student at The University of British Columbia and am double majoring in Gender, Race, Sexuality & Social Justice, and Psychology. I am passionate about adolescent psychiatry and mental health advocacy. In addition, I have been working with LBN for over a year as a tutor and a fundraising assistant. In addition, I have 5+ years of experience working with children with physical and cognitive disabilities and have learned the importance of adaptive and catered learning environments and styles.

Aislynn Grant

My name is Aislynn Grant and I’m a third year student at the University of Ottawa. Volunteering in an organization that makes a difference in people’s lives has always been a passion of mine and I’m excited to be part of the HR team at LBN!

Keerat Grewal

My name is Keerat Grewal (she/her), and I am a third-year PhD student in Experimental Surgery at McGill University. I have been working with LBN for over a year in mentor and coordinator roles. I'm excited to get to work in more of the behind-the-scenes areas of LBN as an HR assistant!

Quizzy Toca

Hi! My name is Quizzy and I plan to major in psychology for university. I began my journey here at LBN as a mentor and have grown to love the community and the values that they hold. My hobbies include reading, learning new languages, and sometimes... exercise.

Hannah Dubinski

My name is Hannah Dubinski (she/her), and I am a third-year student at the University of Ottawa. Meeting new people, forming new friendships, and helping others has always been a huge part of my life. I am volunteering as an HR assistant to expand my knowledge on the needs of others and am looking forward to do what I can to ensure a positive learning environment for all!

Chantelle Hutchinson

My name is Chanelle, and I’m in my last year of studies at the University of Ottawa. Aside from school, I enjoy intramural volleyball and reading. I’m volunteering at LBN because I like helping and supporting people, as well as promoting a positive environment. I'm excited to support LBN's objective and collaborate with the team.

Ines Bouvier

My name is Ines and I’m currently an international student in my last year of high school. I started volunteering with LBN as a mentor and have been lucky enough to take on more roles over time, including HR Assistant, due to my passions for Psychology, Business (Management), and furthering my involvement with LBN, as I truly admire its cause, the work it does, and the difference it makes within our community. In my free time, I enjoy reading, writing, cooking, and watching (or rewatching) TV shows and movies.

Charlotte Kreuzer

My name is Charlotte Kreuzer, I am a 3rd year Political Science student at the University of Ottawa. I am volunteering at the LBN as a HR assistant, I am really looking forward to gaining experience and knowledge in this field of work, and learning more about the LBN!

Program Team

The LBN Program Team works directly with LBN staff to assist with program, operations, and administrative tasks. Members of this team learn more about staff and non-profit organization structure, develop skills in administrative and operational roles, and have the opportunity to network with different stakeholders within LBN. From organizing spreadsheets to supporting outreach and resource creation, this team aids in keeping LBN running day-to-day.

Brendan Lu

Hi! I’m Brendan and I’m a third year undergrad at UBC going for a BA (hopefully with Honours) in sociology. I’ve been in LBN since 2018, having been both a reading and math mentor, eventually a program coordinator and executive coordinator, and now a program team member. So I can proudly and gratefully say that I’ve been here for a while, and loved my time here because I enjoy helping others both academically (and socially), and have also loved seeing what goes on behind the scenes to get our programs going. In my free time, I like music, running, food, and watching hockey.

Gamen Gill (she/her/hers)

Gamen has been with LBN for 3 years now, beginning her journey as a Mentor during the Covid-19 pandemic, and has since worked her way up to an Executive Coordinator and member of the Program Team here at LBN. She has recently graduated from UBC with a bachelor’s degree in Biology, hoping to pursue a career in pediatric medicine. She is passionate about giving all children an equal opportunity to learn and providing the resources needed to achieve this, she is looking forward to working with the Learning Buddies Network to fulfill this passion and help make a difference in someone’s life.

CC Liang

I am a first-year Bachelor of Science plus Master of Management student at the University of British Columbia intending to major in Cognitive Systems. I have been with LBN since 2020, and have had the role of Reading and Math Mentor, Executive and Program Coordinator, Cantonese and Mandarin translator, and member of the Program Team. With my passion in working with children and benefiting society, I seek to incoporate my multidisciplinary knowledge and skills to support LBN. A fun fact about me is that I also work as a piano teacher at the Royal Conservatory of Music.

Communications Team

The LBN Communications Team seeks to educate and grow our external audience and local community. Members work to create and push content across all social channels, so that our mission and initiative may reach and inspire more individuals. Volunteers in this team gain experience in an variety of areas, including: marketing & communications, graphic design & branding, content creation & video editing, and public relations.

Sandra Cao

Sandra is currently a first year Interactive Arts and Technology student at SFU. She’s been with LBN since 2019 in various roles, such as reading mentor, on-call coordinator, and a communication team member. With a passion for creativity, Sandra became a design team lead to explore the leadership opportunities at LBN whilst offering what she enjoys the most of. In her spare time, Sandra enjoys listening to music and making comics.

Duneesha De Silva

Hello! My name is Duneesha and I am currently finishing off my BSc in Biology with a minor in Psychology at the University of British Columbia. I joined LBN as a reading mentor last summer and then continued as an oncall reading mentor in the fall. I decided to join the communications team to help engage the LBN community and create awareness of LBN’s programs to the public. In my spare time I like to read.

Megan Zhang

Megan is a high school student, joining LBN in 2022 as a Reading Mentor. As the terms progressed, she became more dedicated to the mission of fostering learning among students and is now volunteering as a Program Coordinator. With that, she utilized her passion for writing and joined the Communications Team, eventually becoming the Team Lead for the Blogs Team. Since then, she has been working with her team on creating an educational and fun blog space. In her spare time, she often takes power naps or attempts (and fails) to crochet.

Libby Lee

My name is Libby Lee and I am a grade 12 student currently in highschool. I have been with LBN since 2020, and have had the roles of a Mentor, Executive Coordinator, and am currently the Comms Team Video Lead! I decided to join the Comms Team because it was one of many great opportunities that the organization offered to develop interpersonal and communication skills while volunteering. I like video editing, so the Video Team Lead role was perfect for me! Some of my hobbies include snowboarding, painting, and reading and one interesting fact about me is that I have once gone 50 hours without sleep.

Systems Support Team

The LBN System Support Assistants (SSAs) work alongside LBN's IT Managers and IT Committee to develop the organization's technical infrastructure and workflow, from improving algorithms and creating dashboards to maintaining current platforms and systems. Our SSAs ensure LBN can scale sustainably and create a greater impact, as IT lets us automate, simplify, and optimize current processes. These volunteers gain technical experience in programming, data science and analytics, and debugging, while developing their soft teamwork and collaboration skills.

Angela Lam

My name is Angela Lam and I am currently a high school senior interested in studying Computer Science. I have been working with LBN for roughly a year working my way up from a mentor to an Executive Coordinator to an IT SSA. I am passionate about LBN’s mission of providing academic support and limiting the barriers to success for less fortunate individuals. I look forward to helping LBN’s cause on a greater scale, working internally, and growing my knowledge and interest in technology. In my free time, I enjoy playing music, reading, and watching shows and movies.

Kamaldeep Dhami

My name is Kamaldeep Dhami. I am originally from India and I am a data addict who loves to organize data to make it more informative and valuable. I am also a recipient of a Bachelor of Technology in Computer Science Engineering and am currently enrolled in Big Data Analysis Program. Let’s connect and help little buddies!

Kurtis Lo

Hi, my name is Kurtis, and I am currently in Grade 12. I am passionate about exploring the outdoor world and the digital world. I also have interests in badminton, gaming, and exploring new things. I enjoy volunteering with LBN on the tech team and am eager to learn more.

Susan Habibollahi

My Name is Susan and I am an IT System Support Assistant volunteer at LBN. I am currently in my last year of undergrad at York University, majoring in Information Technology. I have a high interest in technical systems analysis and excited to use and grow my skills within LBN

Language Support Team

The Language Support Team assists with inquiries and program registration in the following languages: Cantonese, French, Gujarati, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Punjabi, Urdu, Vietnamese. If you are fluent in another language other than English, either verbal, written, or both, feel free to join us! This is a low commitment work and you will only be asked if a parent reaches out to us.

Community Building Club

The Community Building Club acts in a leadership capacity to improve the quality of LBN. They design evidence-based breathing and grounding worksheets for students to engage in before sessions to improve their concentration and mindset toward learning. As well, the team also creates resources to improve the connection between mentors and buddies. Moreover, the Community Building Club organizes events and initiatives to encourage networking within the organization and catalyze youth leadership, for instance through career panels and mentor-mentee pairings.

Alumni Association

The LBN Alumni Association is eager to share their experiences gained through LBN and their expertise in their respective industries with our secondary/post-secondary volunteers—the next generation of leaders. These alumni members provide guidance and support on a variety of topics, including career and school advice, mental health, and personal development. They also gain networking opportunities with other alumni members through virtual and in-person events.
